 USER EDUCATION PROGRAMME

User Education programmes in different phases for library users are organized periodically to get them acquainted with the library collection and technology used to retrieve information and the various services available. User Awareness programmes for online journals and e-books are also organized from time to time. 

Library users are referred to information sources including individuals, documents and institutions. 

Jadavpur University Library has been a major information center not only to the students, research scholars and faculty members of the university but also to users from colleges and universities in the vicinity and throughout the country. 

ACHIEVEMENTS  SINCE 2002

q       Library work and services are being automated with the help of Libsys. A Library Management Software, Libsys Web Version is being utilized in library automation and is operational in all sections of Central Library. Retro conversion has been completed. Databases of books, journals and theses etc. are being updated.

q       Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and WebOPAC are operational for about five lakhs books and other documents.

q       Establishment of Centre for Digital library and Documentation – a popular and successful programme under Potential for Excellence of UGC.

§         A Learning Resource Centre has been set-up with sixty nodes for the academic community for retrieving On-line journals/books and for internet browsing.

§         Establishment of the Institutional Repository with the help of D-space software.

q       The users may search all E-books, On-line journals and databases, from all the computers connected to the Jadavpur University Network. Digital Library may be accessed through the Jadavpur University portal.

q       The ground floor, first floor of the Annex Building have been completed and  services have been extended.

q       The Second floor/ Third floor (Digital Archives) of the Annex Building are on the way of completion.

q       The Library Services have been extended. The library remains open on Saturdays and Sundays.

q       The Library has published eight Publications.

q       Implementation of RFID -- The RFID project has been undertaken to automate the Circulation Section. In the first phase of the project, about 50.000 books have been tagged. L-Smart Software for Libsys Server has been used for this purpose. The Smart Cards are being introduced for the users.

q       There is no backlog in processing of books.

q       A.C. has been installed in the stack of the ground floor.

q       The list of Current Journals subscribed by JU Library is available in web.

§         INFLIBNET Regional Training Programme in Library Automation (IRTPLA) organised by Central Library, Jadavpur University in collaboration with INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, held on 15^th to 19^th July 2002.

§         NACLIN 2003 organised by Central Library, Jadavpur University in collaboration with DELNET, New Delhi, held on 14^th to 17^th October 2003.

§         A three-day workshop/training on ‘Conservation and Preservation of Books & Other kinds of Documents’ was held at Central library on 11^th-12^th June & 14^th June 2008 for the professional staff members of Jadavpur University Library.

q       Retraining of College Teachers Programme under UGC University with Potential for Excellence scheme on “Digital Information Sources for Research and Digital Library (Theory and Practice)” was organised in the Central Library from 18^th to 21^st December 2006.

q       E-Reference Services are provided.

q       Old and Rare Section is being reorganized – Catalogue of Dr.Triguna Sen Collection, Sri Sudhindranath Datta  Collection and NCE Bengal Collection have been prepared and are also available in web.
